The concerns raised about the prospect of injection wells at the JH Campbell Plant caused the EPA to call a public hearing in Holland.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is hosting an open house and public hearing on The J.H. Campbell coal plant that was unlawfully required to continue operations, rather than shutting down in May of 2025. Consumers Energy is now seeking permits for two new injection wells to store coal waste deep underground. Consumers Energy stated they "planned the wells as part of Campbell’s eventual decommissioning."

We urge you to attend the open house to learn more and also make a public statement during the hearing if you have questions or concerns. Comments can be submitted in person or written to the EPA's docket.make a comment to the EPA on line or plan to attend the hearing! Effective monitoring is a completely reasonable demand, given the importance of Lake Michigan to our community.
