The Politics and Local Reality of Food Insecurity

Presented by Those on the Front Line

Scott Rumpsa (Community Action House) & Margaret Mason (Christian Neighbors)

At this week's monthly Saugatuck Douglas Area Indivisible meeting, Tuesday, November 18, 7 PM – 8:30 PM we will hear from two local agencies who can report on what they see in our own community. They will report on the ways in which government policies and programs impact all of us, and particularly those at the margins. We welcome Scott Rumpsa, Executive Director of Community Action House which serves Ottawa and Allegan County, and Margaret Mason longtime community volunteer and Board Chair of Christian Neighbors.

Scott is CEO of Community Action House, a 56-year-old anti-poverty organization based in Holland, Michigan. With degrees from Hope College (’01) and Grand Valley State University, as well as an MBA concentrating in nonprofit management from George Washington University, he is passionate about excellence and innovation in service of social and economic justice. Scott worked in the business, education, and governmental sectors before transitioning to the nonprofit sector. Prior to leading Community Action House, Scott held leadership positions at innovative nonprofits in rural Kenya and Washington, DC. Joining Community Action House represents Scott’s return home to West Michigan, where he is glad to be serving the community and raising his two children, Michael (10) and Caroline (8), just down the street from his alma mater, Hope College.

This will be a time of educating ourselves and learning what we can do to push for government policies that reduce food insecurity and ensure that children do not go to bed hungry. It will give us action items for immediate assistance through these local agencies. Come with your thoughts and questions. There will be time for conversation. And bring food items and or financial support for these excellent agencies working to combat hunger and meet the needs of those most vulnerable in our community.

We will also celebrate some of our superheroes for democracy. See you there. The time is now and we need you.
